2009 YEAR END AWARDS
Another year - year 14 in our annuls - has passed, a champion has been crowned, and the cool ones look forward to the most wonderful time of the year - draft weekend. In the meantime, we look back at 2009 with our Year End Awards.

Most Valuable Player
We thought last year was tough, this year is even tougher. The answer is certainly less obvious than in past years, when obvious choices like LaDanian Tomlinson and Tom Brady existed. You look at the total points lists: Drew Brees lead the QB position with 148, but Aaron Rodgers was right on his heels with 143. RB? Adrian Peterson lead with 102 points, but for a team (Hoodlums) that didn't make the playoffs, and Maurice Jones-Drew was right behind at 96. Randy Moss and Larry Fitzgerald had 80 and 72 respectively to lead the WR category, and Vernon Davis hung up 72 as well from the TE spot.. We will never award MVP to a kicker and DST is highly unlikely too. So, as a bit of a de facto MVP awarding, we'll give it to Drew Brees, who was the main factor in the Krameron Krazies reaching the finals and was the biggest factor in the Saints prolific offense.

Least Valuable Player
Pretty easy one this year, where you look at the draft results and see how the top picks compare to the best at their position. Scrolling down the list, the first one that jumps out at you in terms of a numerical discrepancy is Matt Forte, who was a mere 76 points behind the leader at RB even as the 4th overall pick in the draft. Particularly when you see that Chris Johnson and Larry Fitzgerald immediately followed in the picks list. Whether it was a sophomore slump, the infusion of Jay Cutler or just a bad team around him, Mr Forte did not make scoring TDs his forte this year.

Team the Fates Were Cruelest Towards
Another tough call. Three teams stand out - the Blowsticks with 445 total points and 7 wins, missing the playoffs by 4 rank points, the Destroyers with 402 total points and 3 wins, and the Yeah Dudes with 401 total points and 5 wins, "giving up" 503 along the way. In the end we'll give it to the Blowsticks, who were within a breath of the playoffs but missed out in the end. Also the only team to be in the top 6 in total points and miss the playoffs, negating a chance to defend their 2008 JIT Championship.

Luckiest Team
Now this is the easiest award we've ever handed out. In a 180 from last year, the Fish Clubbers were last (last!) in total points scored yet were the number 2 seed going in the playoffs after 10 wins. This was so odd the commissioner actually re-checked all the weekly scores to make sure an error wasn't made (it wasn't). Simply put, the when the Clubbers won it was by a hair, and when they lost it was big. And they must have had a good defense because we've never seen anyone win more 20-16 games in Fantasy. Now if they could just translate it in to that elusive first title...

Best Late Round Draft Pick
Scanning down the list again, and avoiding kickers and defenses (who are almost all taken late), one name that stands out is Visanthe Shiancoe, who scored 10 TDs as the 131st pick of the draft and the 10th TE taken. He also finished tied for second in total TE points. Looks as if this one player who benefitted from a 40-year old gunslinger QB coming to town.

Best Transaction
A few choices here; we'll call it the pickup of Vernon Davis, TE, SF for Eddie Royal, WR, DEN. The former was the top TE in total points and scored enough TDs to tie him for second in all receiver (WR/TE) points, behind only Randy Moss. He was also a week in / week out consistent performer for the eventual champion Snatch. Eddie Royal, on the other hand, disappeared in the new look Denver offense. Another player who was hurt by the Jay Cutler trade? (see: Forte, Matt)
